Q. Why and when do Mosquitoes bite?
A. The female mosquitoes are the ones that bite and the blood is needed to make the egg develop. Humans produce Carbon Dioxide when breathing and sweating. The mosquitoes swarm and can sense Carbon dioxide in the air at about 50 feet away and are attracted to people. They are especially attracted to dark clothing.
Q. What are the dangers of insect bites?
A. Mosquitoes can potentially carry serious diseases. There have been a record number of cases of West Nile Virus reported here on Long Island. Just recently a new mosquito carrying virus has popped up. It is called Chikungunya. In late 2013, the first local transmission of chikungunya virus in the Americas was identified in Caribbean countries and territories. Public health officials in the Caribbean are reportedly struggling to contain the outbreak, in part because of the difficulty of limiting mosquito breeding grounds and because the disease is so new to the area. There is concern that in a short time we could see Chikungunya spread to the U.S. the same way the West Nile Virus unexpectedly showed up. Many people also experience severe allergic reactions to mosquito and flying insect bites causing breathing problems and swollen areas.
Q. How does the Mosquito Seeker Treatment protect us from mosquitoes and the diseases they carry?
A. By reducing the population of mosquitoes in your yard the risk is diminished. Although it is impossible to eliminate completely flying pests, by treating the areas where mosquito larvae and adult mosquitoes live and harbor, your exposure will be greatly reduced. Our treatment kills the existing mosquitoes and leaves a repellant that keeps the mosquitoes out.
Q. What products are used?
A. We generally use a mixture of Pyrethrin which is a natural insecticide produced from chrysanthemum flowers and used to eliminate adult mosquitoes and Cedar Tree oil concentrate an organic substance which basically dissolves the eggs and larvae. For heavy infestation we use a stronger formula Onslaught fastcap. If our customers choose we will treat only using the organic product Cedar tree oil concentrate.
Q. How long does the treatment last?
A. For average properties the formulation will keep the property mosquito free for about three weeks. An all organic treatment lasts for about two weeks.
Q. Why doesn’t the treatment last for the whole summer?
A. Although our misting treatment kills the vast majority of mosquito and flying pests from your property there will always be some we miss. They will begin breeding again and begin to increase their population and need to be treated again. The formulation also leaves a repellant that keeps flying pests out. Sun exposure breaks down the repellants effectiveness where by three weeks; it has little if no repellant strength left.
Q. Are these products safe for the environment and safe for humans and pets?
A. Yes, they are environment friendly and not harmful to humans or pets. That is why we have chosen these products which have EPA approval and organic products fall into the class of Green Products.
Q. Is the treatment safe for my plants, trees and flower?
A. Yes, we spray the plants in a fine film that only impacts the insects and does not interfere with the growth or development of plants.
Q. When do you come to spray?
A. We schedule our time to your request but want to be sure that we spray when the area is free of people and pets.
Q. Do I have to be home at the time of treatment?
A. We only require the homeowner to be home for the first treatment. After that you don’t need to be home
Q. How do I know when you will return for my next treatment?
A. Our office staff will email you when your next spray is scheduled for.
Q. Do I have to sign a contract?
A. Yes and no. The NY State DEC requires all customers receive a signed contract. This contract is non-binding and you can cancel your service at anytime.
Q. When can I use the yard again?
A. The yard should not be used until the formulation has dried. The time depends on weather conditions. On a dry day, treatment dries more quickly than on a moist humid day.
Q. Does rain effect the treatment?
A. A light rain after the treatment does not have an effect on the strength of the treatment. Only a heavy down pour within 24 hours of the treatment will have an effect on the treatments strength. We avoid spraying if weather forecasts anticipate heavy rains. If we treat the property and it rains heavy within 24 hours, we will be happy to come and spray a second time.
Q. Do you spray for special events?
A. Yes, we pride ourselves in our ability to improve the quality of the experience of an outdoor wedding, carnival or outdoor party.
